I am sending this out to BMN members who specialize in any aspect of children's book publishing, whether your an author, artist, publisher, or offer some other valued skill needed in the creation of children's books.

I invite you to follow my blogs and comment, critique, and network with me as friends (so I can follow your work too).

I have found ning in general to be the best marketing and reference tool compared to any advertising, networking, or leads I have ever used -- free or paid for. And all it's costs is our time.

Many of you are already in my friend network, and thank you for sharing your work with me. For those of you reading, this that I have not introduced myself too, I would like to now, and ask we be friends so I can follow your craft as well.

We all need to support each others work through this economic distress, no stimulus or bail out is going to help us.

In my latest blog post, you will also see three other ning networks that I have created. One for children's book professionals/enthusiasts, one for southern/Tennessee writers, artists, etc., and one for WillowRaven clients (present, past, or future) or simply just fans of my work. I invite you to join the appropriate ones for you as well.

Hi Marion, I just joined this site and, believe it or not I am writing series about the conflict between the Islamic Empire of the Ottomans and the Christian Kingdoms of Eastern Europe in 15-16th centuries. The first book is called The Sword and the Shield of the Realm and the series is called Merchants of Time. Occasionally, my website is visited by the University of Istanbul. This is not an attempt of promoting my work, but please visit my site and read in my profile about the series. I am truly interested to hear your opinion.

By involving the local community, authors, publishers, editors, journalists and all forms of the literary world, we are opening their minds and bringing hope where there was doubt.
Scribblers’ Retreat is not the typical classroom setting. It was designed to bring world-class authors, literature professors, editors, journalists, illustrators, photo journalists, proofreaders, publishers, publicists, screenplay writers, and website/graphic designers, etc. one-on-one with young and old alike. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for someone who has had a manuscript in a desk drawer for 40 years or who has an outstanding poem that simply must be read.

Hi Marion.
You left a comment on my page way back in August but I haven't really figured out how this site works yet and am sorry I'm just getting a chance to reply. I know the Hannah's Hope was suggested for translation into Russian a couple of years ago, but I never heard more beyond that it was going before some missionary translation committe, so I guess it didn't "make the cut". I would be thrilled if God took the messages He placed on my heart into other countries, however parts of the book are very "western" in mindset, addressing how part of why infertility is so hard to graple with (for the average north American) is due to our "all about me" cultural mindset. I know there are univeral messages in the book, but I don't know if all parts of it would translate culturally. If you have any additional thoughts on this, I'm always open to new doors God might lead the book through.
Blessings!
Jenni :)

Dear Joel. Thanks for the comments about marketing to bookstores. Yes, if you can leave a small marketing pack with the bookstore I am sure it will increase your chances of them partnering with you. Best of luck

About Me and My Book:
I love Turkey, love books, and love writing.

About me ...

What is a British lady doing living in Istanbul, Turkey since the 1990s?

Well, I guess it is just like author John Freely says, "The city just gets inside you and never lets you go."

And my interest in this network ...
... books about Turkey, books set in Turkey, books that will get Turks reading, books to be translated English/Turkish ... in short, anything about books and Turkey!

I would like to invite you to:

* Come and visit me at my store Greenhouse in Kadikoy, Istanbul, the largest English language bookstore on the Asian side of this vast inter-continental city

* Help us excite Turkish children about reading. We can arrange for you to have great opportunities in a speaking tour in private schools in Istanbul

* Check out my book reviews every Sunday in a national English-language Turkish newspaper : www.sundayszaman.com - Arts and Culture page

* Send me texts and manuscripts that need translating. Recent translations that I have published include "The History of Turkish Coffee", "Mevlana Year 2007" and "The Hittites".

* Attend a writer's workshop in Istanbul. WOW! What a great location! This fall we will be running a 3 day workshop with famous author Barbara Nadel (who says she sets her detective novels in Istanbul because "there are so many good places to hide a body")

* Check out my business partner's book that I edited: "Culture Smart - Turkey" by Charlotte McPherson

İyi okumalar! - Happy Reading!

Good content, or good editing?

Reading Marco Polo's "The Travels" this week, I was struck how like a very early Lonely Planet Guide this 13th century manuscript is. Except, the venerable Marco desperately needs a great modern editor to make his chapter titles a bit more zappy, and to create history boxes and culture boxes to highlight features of interest. Maps and some illustrations would make the text a bit less stuffy, too.

That got me thinking ... how much of a book's success is from the original content, and ho

Making a complex topic simple and interesting

Far too many times I have picked up a book on a specialist subject to find it is heavy and indigestible!

Full of long, technical words, and pompous opinion, I am turned off before I have finished chapter one.....

John Shindeldecker avoids this pitfall in "The World of Alevis". He creates a readable but informative introduction to this group of Islamic believers in the Middle East. He says, "My hope is that the reader will have a tasty, balanced meal, and the appetite to come bac

Language, language, language

Have you ever stopped to consider how children learn language, or how they develop reading skills?

If you are a children's books author, this is an essential part of your understanding of your target customer.

Peter Pikkert is an expert in this area, and he has written a book that helps adults learn a foreign language in the same way that children learn their native language.

How to Write a Interesting Biography

Biographies are always a fascinating read. Our curiosity about famous people means we are intrigued to see whether the real person behind the famous persona is exactly like the image portrayed, or whether there is some chink in their armor, some skeleton in the cupboard, or some childhood tragedy that has made them how they are.

Come and visit a lovely summer house

Houses often form an important character in a book. Just think of "The Lake House" in the film of that name. Click on my review in today's paper for another house that is the eponymous hero of a Turkish book ....
