I'm the writer of my first book and looking ahead. I'm looking to learn from those that have expertise in the field of writing, especially self-help or memoirs. I look forward to getting more knowledge.

That's the hard part...taking my time. :) I am learning though. What I thought two years ago was a book on the shelf in a matter of months. Boy was I in for a surprise. Although it's been sometimes painstaking to learn what I know now I realize I am doing exactly what I was intended to do. Write.
The first 50 pages are the most important from an agent/editors point of view, but I'm sure you know that. My experience tells me that an editor makes suggestions; you make decisions. Good luck with the project and take your time.
Hi Kim.
I just joined this sight myself and have self-published two novels. As to your query about editors, I have used Pam Guerrieri, with great satisfaction at a fair price. If you're still in need, I'll send her email. Incidentally, she doesn't pay me for this. I've just been where you are and it wasn't easy to find someone to trust.
Kim,
I did my own editing but you could try Brenda Hill. Just Google her name and I think you can find her site. I can't say that self publishing is the best way to go. I've done that and it didn't pay of but it may be a way to start.
