Scribblers’ Retreat is a non-profit organization established with the goal of reaching writers of all ages; to inspire and promote their hidden gifts and talents.
By involving the local community, authors, publishers, editors, journalists and all forms of the literary world, we are opening their minds and bringing hope where there was doubt.
Scribblers’ Retreat is not the typical classroom setting. It was designed to bring world-class authors, literature professors, editors, journalists, illustrators, photo journalists, proofreaders, publishers, publicists, screenplay writers, and website/graphic designers, etc. one-on-one with young and old alike. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for someone who has had a manuscript in a desk drawer for 40 years or who has an outstanding poem that simply must be read.

Shirley, My agent is actually pitching my second novel and two nonfiction projects while I'm using www.horizonspast.com for added visibility. As far as chapter length I don't think there are any rules. Chapter 1 in Horizons Past was originally part of Chapter 2 with a *** time break, but my editor said to make it a separate Chapter. My only personal rule is that the first chapter should be long enough the reader must make an investment in the book that will encourage them to keep reading.
I appreciate your reading the book. there's a forum on that Blog wher you can comment and critique as you read. Bill

Hi BIll, I just signed up for your blog so I could read some of the book. If you let people read it free, how can you sell it....just wondering.....Shirley

I read the first chapter. It was very short. I think my chapters are all twenty or more pages...is there any special page limits on chapters....

I'll keep on reading. Do you find by putting up a book on a blog it brings more people to your website....I don't see where too many have been to mine...so perhaps I'm not getting out there enough....

Judi, I've applied to Hearst for a number of different projects, syndicates, you name it ove the years with similar results, but I did manage to keep a weekly column going with them for about 18 years. I would not want to be someone looking for a newspaper career during this period of the "Amazing Vanishing Newspaper. Thanks or your comment. Bill

Hi Bill -- nice to meet you! Looking forward to reading your blog! Your bio made me laugh because years ago, when I was an absolute greenhorn with a horrible portfolio, I had applied to Hearst in Manhattan and the Creative Director who interviewed me very politely told me to go back home and get some experience... I was destroyed and cried all the way home but 2 years later I applied again and he hired me as a freelance editorial designer for magazines... small world huh?

Create a Market Survey For Your Fiction Submission

OK, here’s the problem. You are an unpublished author, and an editor has requested a complete manuscript of your novel. They read the manuscript, and they “just love it,” BUT they’re not sure of the market for the book. There is something a little quirky in the book that the editor likes because of its originality, but will it sell? So they take a pass rather than assume the risk on your work.

Why not head this problem off by including two additional items with the manuscript: a "Competition Su… Continue

Braving a Quill Flogging

I boxed up my ego, my pride of accomplishment, my certainty that I am a good writer, my belief that anyone who feels otherwise simply is out of touch with reality, and submitted my first chapter of Vamonos!, my second novel, to Ray Rhamey’s blog “Flogging the Quill” – “Turn the Page” critique.

Winner of the Great Erotica Throwdown

I recently posted a Blog asking authors of erotica to post a comment stating why their book should be the first erotic novel for me to read since Fanny Hill and The Story of O in college. The process was an eye opener.
