Scribblers’ Retreat is a non-profit organization established with the goal of reaching writers of all ages; to inspire and promote their hidden gifts and talents.
By involving the local community, authors, publishers, editors, journalists and all forms of the literary world, we are opening their minds and bringing hope where there was doubt.
Scribblers’ Retreat is not the typical classroom setting. It was designed to bring world-class authors, literature professors, editors, journalists, illustrators, photo journalists, proofreaders, publishers, publicists, screenplay writers, and website/graphic designers, etc. one-on-one with young and old alike. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for someone who has had a manuscript in a desk drawer for 40 years or who has an outstanding poem that simply must be read.

Please excuse me for not leaving my name. Please call me Bev. I know you do not want or need my sympathy for your trials; perhaps we can help each other find a way to give you some satisfaction concerning injustice. I know how frustrating and powerless it can make you feel. Bev

Hi Shirley: One of the ways I have been successful at getting reviews was to look at the list of top reviewers on Amazon.com, and use the friend's inquiry on Amazon.com to ask if they were interested in reviewing my book. I only contacted reviewers who had in the past done reviews on the topic of my book. I sent out about 30 requests and got 4 reviews. Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Deborah Rummelhart

Profile Information

Hometown:
I'm orginally from Concord, NH but have lived in Tennessee for the past thirty years.
About Me and My Book:

I moved to Tn when my oldest son was wrongly convicted and sent to death row. I started writing at this time and wrote our story and then went on to write other books. My life story was the third one published after Death Row, and Victims. Then I wrote From Vietnam To Hell, Congregation of the Condemned, Young Blood, Road Angels, Long Journey Home, The Choice Is Yours and A Mothers Torment.

I wrote articles that were published in magazines and was on Geraldo, Maury, Sally, Jerry Springer, Rolonda and The Shirley SHow in Canada. The BBC then did a documentary on my life that was play ed overseas.

My youngest son and I spoke out on the Journey of Hope each year in a different state. That's two weeks of speaking out against the death penalty and more violence, creating more victims. Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking also speaks out on the Journey as does Sam Shepperd who is the son of Dr Sam Shepherd convicted of killing his mother and sentenced to die. Sam has spent his whole life trying to prove his innocence. The movie, THe Fugitive is based on his story.

I also went on TN death row and five of the guys came out to do a DVD called The Choice Is Yours where they talk to the kids about the dangers of doing drugs, alcohol and hanging in gangs, and wiht the wrong kind of people. The video I take to schools and speak to the kids to try and stop them before they end up in prison, or death row. www.thechoiceisyours.org

When my oldest son was killed in 99, I started the Jeff Dicks Coalition, www.jeffdicks.org to save prisoners from medical neglect, and to stop the murdering of these prisoners by being denied their medication.

Last year I lost my youngest and only son left, and since then I haven't been able to speak out. I will be sending out my book to see about getting it made into a movie. I never knew which company took out the option so will just have to send it out blind....

My Books

A Mothers Torment
How far would you go to save your child’s life? Would you write hot checks, sell your home, attempt a-jail break - be on the run for a year with two young children? This mother did.
Fighting the system while running from the law, living on the lam with her eleven year old son, and baby granddaughter, A MOTHER’S TORMENT is a testimony to family love; a system’s indifference; a mother’s desperation; and finally, an unjust death. www.amotherstorment.com

Road Angels
Women who ride motorcycles www.roadangels.org

The Choice Is Yours
Aimed at teens on anti violence, drugs, alcohol and getting into trouble. Prisoners talk to the kids about how and why they found themselves in prison and death row by the choices they made.
www.thechoiceisyours.org

A Long Journey Home
Stories by victims of murder who oppose more violence in the death penalty. Sam Reese Sheppard spent all his life trying to prove his father’s innocence, after he was convicted of killing his mother. Dr. Sam Sheppard was the case that The Fugitive movie was based on. www.shirleydicks.net/journey.htm

Virtual Book Signing

I was reading about the virtual book tours that some authors do and there was an ebook for sale about how to do these and all about them, but it was 29.00 so it was out of my range.

I was wondering how many authors had taken one of these tours and how it worked out for them. Are the book sales good, and how does one go about setting one up. I take it that these tours are done on a blog on someone's website. Or that's the impression I got from reading

Book Signing Tips

I notice others put a link in instead of writing it all out to make the entry shorter, so I put the tips that came from authors all over on book signings. You'll find them at www.shirleydicks.net/signingtips.htm I hope they help....when ever someone sends me something to ad to it, I ad so maybe some of them will seem like the same tip....but I think it's a good listing. The Choice Is Yours

I haven't figured out this site yet, but working on it. I don't know if the blogs are to put about our books, or to write about what we're doing, or are interested in. At any rate, one of my books is called The Choice Is Yours which is aimed at teens about violence and getting into trouble.

I also went up on Tennessee's death row and did a video and DVD with five of the guys who came out to talk to the kids about how they found themselves up on the row.

Authors4Charity

Authors4charity was started back in 93 and this year we're adding a promotions and publishing company for it's members. We're trying to add new things this year as we've not done much promotions in the past years. Just floating along doing our signings together but we decided that this year we'd try to get out to the public and to grow along with adding new things to our organization. Our web site is www.authors4charity.com It used to be www.authorsforcharity.com but we lost the domain name and… Continue
