- The Darkness is the third in my police procedural series set in the fictional town of Cairnburgh, near Aberdeen. It began life as a revenge story but, through its many rewrites, became an examination of the balance between the law and justice, revenge and compassion. The darkness at its heart threatens to overwhelm not only the perpetrator of the crimes but the policeman who investigates them.
