About Me and My Book:
My appreciation for nature took me to Kauai, the most luscious of all the Hawaiian Islands with pleated cliffs and treacherous seas fending off newcomers. It is believed by Hawaiians that a mantle of mana (spiritual power) protects the island from harm. It is here that I listened to wind voices and the seed for my historical novel Wai-nan: High Chiefess of Hawai`i took root in my heart. This story inspired by the powerful personage of Ka`ahumanu, the favorite wife of Kamehameha the Great is a poetic rendering of the ancients with tales of heroes and heroines doing supernatural deeds of mythological proportions. The people of old Hawai'i were connected to nature, played freely, loved passionately and communed with gods that dwelled in every tree, rock and flower. This book is written in the name of Wai-nani with great Aloha.
My quest today is to get to as many naturally beautiful places as I can before they are no more! I have hiked, biked, kayaked and ridden on horseback through some of our most precious wilderness areas. My travel articles and photos have appeared in numerous national publications. My essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Times and various literary journals. My story “Look Both Ways on Small Islands” was included in the I Should Have Stayed Home anthology published by RDR Books. Please go to my website www.LindaBallouAuthor.com where you may view many of my articles and photos. If you look closely your reward will be to discover the Secret to Youth.

Review of Wai-nani, High Chiefess of Hawaii-Her Epic Journey

Another great review of my book about ancient Hawai’i
Just a quick note to tell you what Sr. Editor of Long Story Short, an ezine for writers, had to say about my upcoming book, Wai-nani: High Chiefess of Hawai'i - Her Epic Journey:
"I recently read this book and cannot say enough about it. Linda has captured the beauty of Hawai'i and the ancient lore and legend that makes Hawai'ian history so enchanting. Her main character, Wai-nani, is fourteen when the story begins, and we follow her as she becomes the first wife of the soon-to-be high chief of Hawai'i. (based upon Kamehameha the Great) Her gift is in the water, swimming with the porpoises, befriending them as she catches a fin and flies through the waves with them.
Using her instincts and wisdom, Wai-nani remains her husband's most trusted advisor throughout his life, while he wrestles with change and the arrival of the white Christian men who bring both the positive ideas and the decadence of the new world.
I highly recommend this beautiful historical novel. You can find it in May 08 at www.lindaballouauthor.com . Don't miss it!"

Feel Good Story

In search of traditional Hawaiian healing venues I circumnavigated the Big Island sampling lomi-lomi, and other forms of massage along the way. What better way to rejuvenate body and mind than in the knowing hands of masters and restorative waters of Hawai’i. If you follow in my footsteps, I promise you won’t be sorry.
