About Me and My Book:
My Name is Bertha:
Author Fran Lewis
Illustrated by: Jamie Miller

I am Fran Lewis the author of My Name is Bertha and now Bertha Speaks Out. Before writing these short stories I was a New York City Teacher for over 30 years. I taught grades one through six and later as well as becoming the Reading and Writing Staff Developer for my school. Teaching children to read is really very rewarding and introducing them to writing and creating their own stories was exciting for the students and me as well.
Growing up can be really difficult when you are over weight or not really good at sports or dancing. I hope you will learn by reading my stories that you can be anything that you want to be and no one can stop you from reaching your goals and dreams. Not everyone is born athletic, beautiful, thin and a genius. But, every one of you is smart or excellent in something whether it is drawing, jump rope or even running track, it does not matter. Who you are makes you special. I hope that you enjoy reading about Bertha and Tillie and learn that there is a little bit of Bertha in everyone.
Love, Bertha and Fran Lewis

Author’s Bio: Bertha Speaks Out

Written by: Fran Lewis

Illustrated by: Jamie Miller

My Name is Bertha is soon to be followed by this new book called Bertha Speaks Out. I spent my whole life living in the Bronx. I grew up on Southern Boulevard and Tremont Avenue. I went to P.S. 67 on Mohegan Avenue and to JHS 44 on Prospect Avenue. I really loved both of these schools and for the most part the teachers were great. In this book you will learn how one teacher in my JHS really helped me to find my inner voice and let it out in order to speak freely. Throughout my years in elementary school and the start of JHS I was always taught to remain silent and not speak out for fear of being disrespectful. I soon learned that adults can be mean and disrespectful to children for some reason often got away with it. As an educator I learned that in order to teach children respect and proper behavior you had to give them the respect and love they deserved. I learned to listen to them when they wanted to express themselves even if we disagreed. I learned to discipline without humiliating them. I gave them the right to speak in order to help them grow into the young adults and adults they are today. I am so proud of all of them and what I know many of them have accomplished.

Summary for Bertha Speaks Out

Growing up was difficult for me being overweight, too quiet and really afraid to speak out in order to defend myself. In this book Bertha learns that she needs to let her voice be heard and no longer allows herself to be the scapegoat. Not everyone is beautiful, looks like a model or even dances like the pros, but everyone in the world every child and adult is good at something. Find out what your strengths are and build on them and success will be yours.

Bertha also learns in this book how to deal with a family member’s disease and how she and her sister Tillie work together to help the other members of her family when grandma gets Alzheimer’s.

I hope that you enjoy reading about Bertha and Tillie and learn that there is a little bit of her in everyone.

Love
Bertha, Tillie and Fran Lewis

I’m Your Mother Listen to Me

I’m your mother listen to what I tell you to do
I’m your mother this is what I think of you
Each day you get up and you go to school
A perfect student who follows every rule

You always listen to whatever I say that’s true
Sometimes too well and you need to speak out and let the world hear you
Smart and yet quiet and keeps to yourself
Never making waves and hiding behind others like an elf

Wearing what I tell you to and never quarreling or caring

Interview with Sally Hanan: BLog Tour:Joy in a Box: Must read

1. What was the reasoning behind the title “Joy in a Box,” and how does the title of your book intertwine all of the stories within the collection?

I’ve noticed that most writers choose the title of one of their stories to represent the whole collection, and I couldn’t use “The Collection,” as that would definitely have been a bit boring. I chose “ Joy in a Box” because most of the stories are inspiring and speak comfort and hope into difficult situations.

2. In the title story “Joy in a Box,… Continue

Hi Fran,

Congratulations on your books, My Name is Bertha and now Bertha Speaks Out. I just wanted to mention to you a website I built called AlreadyPublished.com. It's for authors to promote their book. You do so by posting your book's first chapter, giving readers a peek into your book. The site is free and the list of books is growing, so please check it out. :) BTW, good luck with your books!

p.s. You can also check out this blog post on the Already Published Ning Network, I explain how to post your book. You can also learn more about the website there.

Best,
John

I am sending this out to BMN members who specialize in any aspect of children's book publishing, whether your an author, artist, publisher, or offer some other valued skill needed in the creation of children's books.

I invite you to follow my blogs and comment, critique, and network with me as friends (so I can follow your work too).

I have found ning in general to be the best marketing and reference tool compared to any advertising, networking, or leads I have ever used -- free or paid for. And all it's costs is our time.

Many of you are already in my friend network, and thank you for sharing your work with me. For those of you reading, this that I have not introduced myself too, I would like to now, and ask we be friends so I can follow your craft as well.

We all need to support each others work through this economic distress, no stimulus or bail out is going to help us.

In my latest blog post, you will also see three other ning networks that I have created. One for children's book professionals/enthusiasts, one for southern/Tennessee writers, artists, etc., and one for WillowRaven clients (present, past, or future) or simply just fans of my work. I invite you to join the appropriate ones for you as well.

Fran,
Use your donating part of the proceeds to Alzheimer's as part of your marketing plan! That will help get you notice. Put out a press release playing that up.

HI Fran,
You know about me already! I'm Jan. D. Holiday at facebook and a member of RRW like you! Are you self published then and how are your books printed? A Print service, like Xlibris or did you work with a book printer. I did my book and will do my other books with Lightning Source, Inc. Yes, I understand about needing to get your books more notice and make MONEY!
It isn't easy, is it?
Talk again, here or on Facebook.
Sincerely

Hi Fran,

I had nothing to do with getting the book released. Mythica, as the publisher, deals with all that. Being a traditional publisher they see to everything and I don't have to do a thing. It is difficult tracking your sales if you're not with a trad publisher. Were your books self-published?

I'm really excited about hte release of this one and will be blogging most of the day to announce its appearance. I haven't got your address yet. Did you send it to me at my normal email address or the Mythica one. I don't get to the Mythica mailbox every day so I'd better go check.

Hope to hear from you later.

Best regards

Hi Fran,

I'd be honored to have a dedication page in your excellent and very worthwhile project. Would you like a simple dedication in memory of my Mother, who died in 2004, perhaps with the poem I wrote in her memory? Would that do?

As for my autograph for your copies of my books, I'd be happy to send you a couple of signature strips that can be pasted into the front of the books. I'll just need your mailing address.

Hope you have a wonderful day. My best wishes to you and your Mom.

Brian
