- "The First Lamp" has a time-travel element, a strong conservation theme and an emphasis on the power of choice. To sum it up I would say: Take one volcanic New Yorker named Sarah, introduce her to a very wise young kahuna named Kalah, add in a few love interests to challenge the heart and you have a story of redemption and faith restored. I have evolved so much since writing this book. And the lasting lesson I have learned is this: When a big story finds you, take excellent notes. "The First Lamp" was a gift to me and those who will read it. I don't really know where it came from. I started writing in my journal two hours a day and the story unfolded in my mind like a movie. That's why the dialogue is so real. My background is in two areas that would, on the surface, discourage me from writing such a metaphysical book. My first career was newspaper reporting and my current career is clinical social work in a very traditional healthcare setting. This book is deeply loving and spiritual, but the characters don't mince words about fear-based messages trying to pass for the word of God. It will be viewed as heresy by some, but for some strange reason that pleases me. Yesterday's heretics are today's visionaries. As one of the book's characters says: "If you are skeptical about every belief system but the one you grew up with, you are not a skeptic at all. You are a frightened conformist afraid to have a spontaneous relationship with God."

Cinnamon the dragon and other fiery critics
In 2005 I had the honor of interviewing Richard Bach, the creator of the wildly best-selling book, "Jonathan Livingston Seagull." His latest book, "Curious Lives," is a main source of encouragement for me as a writer. The characters are all humanlike ferrets (very fanciful but deep) and there is a chapter on writer ferrets.
