About Me and My Book:
I grew up on a family farm in northern Utah, the fifth of six children―the youngest until I was 12. I was born during the Great Depression and started school during World War 2. After high school, I enrolled at Brigham Young University, where I received my BS in journalism in 1962.

My journalism career never materialized, for I spent the next nine years working first as a genealogist then as a college instructor. At age 34 and with a young family, I entered the University of Idaho law school, where I earned my Juris Doctor degree in 1974. By this time, I had written The Researcher’s Guide to American Genealogy, a first-in-its-field textbook that is still going strong in its third edition. Today it is considered a classic.

Though I was admitted to the Utah Bar, I opted to work for the Genealogical Department of LDS Church, then transferred to the Temple Department in 1981; I retired as a director in 1999. During those years, I answered questions on both genealogy and temple issues for the Church’s Ensign magazine.

I love the scriptures, both to study and to teach them. I taught them at Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) in the 1960s and 70s and at the Santa Barbara (CA) Institute of Religion while serving a mission with my wife in 2000 and 2001. Back in Utah in 2002, I became obsessed with the notion of writing Bible stories from an LDS viewpoint. And, as they say, the rest is history.

'How Often Would I Have Gathered You' is an intriguing collection of 229 stories from the Old Testament and pertinent modern scriptures. It is written for adults and young adults, in modern English, from a Latter-day Saint viewpoint. It tells of Old Testament prophets, priests, and kings and of Jehovah's dealings with His covenant people. The first story is about the Grand Council before this world was created and the last story is about the Jews in Jerusalem after they returned from Babylon to rebuild their temple and city. The book contains original illustrations, two indexes (to names and to subjects), maps for geographical perspective, footnotes for insights and background, an extensive pronunciation guide, and a chart of the kings of Judah and Israel during the divided monarchy after King Solomon. The stories are told in modern English without embellishment or fictionalizing.

'How Often Would I Have Gathered You' is softbound and has a beautiful cover. It is a book that you will treasure and refer to often for years to come. You can read a sampling of the stories on my web site; you can also order the book.

Great deal!

I have noted that Amazon.com has both of my books on sale for $23.66 (US). Both regularly sell for $29.95. Though I like to sell books on my website, I cannot currently match this price. This would be a good time to snap a good deal. The books are How Often Would I Have Gathered You and The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy. I do not know how long these prices will be offered. How Often... is my award-winning book of Old Testament Stories for adults. You can learn mo… Continue

Exciting News

I just wanted to share my good news with anyone interested.

Last Saturday, September 15, my new book of Old Testament stories, How Often Would I Have Gathered You, received a prestigious Our History--Our Heritage Publications Award (Golden Quill) from the League of Utah Writers. Needless to say, I am very pleased and excited about this honor. :-)

Offended by anti-Mormon Google ads

When you come to my book marketing page, you will see several Google ads down the right side of the page---ads that I have nothing to do with. Some of them are fine, but others are links to anti-Mormon web sites. These are offensive to me. I am a Mormon promoter, and it offends me that my page is cluttered with these links that are misguided and misleading. I am wondering if there is some way to block the ads on my own page that I find offensive. Some of you may have the same kind of problem. I… Continue

Hey Val,

You are welcome and although the adds are offensive and probably shouldn't be there, I am not sure they will remove them.

I think it is a sad day though that anyone is judged by race, religion, or sex. You would think in this day and age it wouldn't be so, but I don't think ignorance will ever die.
