- StepSister Press, LLC is an independent publishing company founded by artist Annie Heckman in 2007 to promote discourse on emerging interdisciplinary art, literature, and critical theory projects. Based in Chicago, the press coordinates projects with artists and writers around the world. It is committed to progressive inquiry through printed material, online projects, and events. StepSister Press supports the work of authors and artists who may have never published before, who may be dealing with unpopular or controversial topics, or who may be breaking into a new genre.
In its first year of business, StepSister released Airline to Heaven, Part I, a collaboration including art and texts by Annie Heckman and writings by Matthew Dal Santo and Terri L. Russ; Submerged: Tales from the Basin, an anthology by over thirty women created to benefit survivors of Hurricane Katrina, edited by Brooklyn author Lauren González with images by Chicago artist Lorien Jordan; and Bitchin’ Bodies: young women talk about body dissatisfaction, a work by feminist theorist Terri L. Russ, with images by artist Karin E. Lekan. StepSister is developing a reputation for current, beautifully made books that embrace contemporary themes in art and culture. Its book launches, coordinated by artist Lorien Jordan, expand on the images and topics in each book so that the events become artworks in themselves.
