About Me and My Book:
" I am a survivor of domestic abuse. I am sharing the intimate details of my life to raise awareness of this terrible crime and prove there is life after abuse - and it can be a life of safety, hope and happiness."

Shackles chart my personal recount of living for 34 years with Domestic Abuse.

I have written this book to raise awareness of this silent crime behind closed doors that affects all levels of society. Another reason why I share my detailed and intimate story – so that others may read my story understand the mental state of someone suffering from Domestic Abuse and hopefully be motivated to break the cycle of fear this crime has over too many lives.

I like to motivate and encourage victims to step out and walk into freedom of new life.

"Our lives begin to end the day we are silent about things that matter." (Martin Luther King)

Smaching the chains of domestic abuse
Victims often stay in abusive relationships through fear, habit or low self esteem. It's never easy to get out but the choice is yours.

Make a decision. Reclaim your life - you deserve it -and so do your children.

Beginning against the backdrop of oppressive communism in East Germany SHACKLES charts my personal battle to walk free after 34 years of domestic abuse. A modern day taboo, this silent crime stalks victims the world over, making no allowances for race, creed, gender, age or wealth.

I was born and raised in East Germany, a nation ruled by communism and secret police. A dark cloud of oppression overshadowed the country and its people, leaving me and my fellow countrymen and women no freedom of choice and movement. Those who knew of a different life before, but dare not speak against the regime for fear of imprisonment or worse, theirs was a consuming depression that led many to try and blot out reality by whatever means they could.
The Stasi was widely regarded as one of the most effective – and repressive – intelligence and secret police agencies in the world.
Living in a country dominated by a suppressive regime and the cold war meant that many East Germans were emotionally stunted. WE WERE NOT ENCOURAGED TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
There was another cloud I lived under - alcoholism and domestic violence. It was common for many fathers, especially in my village, to use alcohol to drown out reality, and my father was no exception. For many years he was an alcoholic.

Alongside our physical needs, inside all of us are basic emotional needs that cry out to be met. If we grow up with these needs unmet, our human nature will strive to find another way to satisfy those needs, I was no exception.
Starved of love and attention at home and growing up in an environment that allowed bullying and cruelty to reign, I looked for every opportunity to attain my deepest desire: a loving family home shared with a loving and caring partner, where children could grow up without fear.
Fear was all I ever knew.
In an attempt to escape, I hastily married a man who was an alcoholic. Inability to speak my mind out of fear, lack of self-confidence, and low self-esteem, were the long term effects I suffered.
By copying my mother, and drawn always to what I knew, I continued the cycle of abuse, and subjected my own children to a repetition of my childhood.
For many years, my children and I were continually subjected to drunken outbursts and insane behaviour, including stalking, by my husband, without any intervention from the German authorities. DV was not then acknowledged as a serious crime. Consequently, my children, witnessed things they should not be exposed to.
Witnessing and experiencing physical, mental and financial abuse, and being made homeless, left with nothing but the clothes we stood up in, has left my children with deep mental scars.

OUR CHILDREN OF TODAY ARE OUR LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Now that I have broken the cycle of abuse and overcome this terrible experience, I like to encourage other vicitms to do just the same.
Today, I have set my heart on raising awareness for this silent crime am very passionate about it.
