Book Marketing Network

The network for book authors and publishers

Many authors wrongfully assume one of two things about a publisher. The first wrong assumption is that publishers would rather not publish titles by unknown authors. The second wrong assumption is that publishers take complete care of the book. All an author has to do is write it and forget about it. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Publishing companies are just that - companies. They are in this business to make money. They are not as concerned with the author's name as they are with the marketability of the book in question. They want books that can provide steady sales over the course of the life of the contract. They want a book that will not only recoup their expenses, but that will give them a sizable profit. If your book is profitable, if it fills the need of a specific genre, or is highly marketable to a large population, then you are practically a shoe-in.

The second assumption is just as bad. The job of the author never ends. The author is just as responsible for their manuscript as is the publisher. Publishers don't like to take risks on authors who are lazy, uneducated about the industry, or otherwise unable to assist in the marketing of their books. Before the economy got so tight, your book would just sit and nothing would come of it after the first two months. Now, publishers are less inclined to spend their money, offer handsome advances, and take those risks for authors who will allow their books to languish.

It's important to become educated about any industry in which you become involved. You cannot educate yourself on one blog, site or through one book. It takes time, money and patience!
