Very true exchanges between me and bookstore customers over the last two years.
Of my books on the signing table.
“Are these complimentary?”
(Really?)
Of the title,
Janeology.
"Geez, is this ANOTHER book about Jane Austen?"
(After I stopped laughing, I said, no, it wasn't remotely concerned with Ms. Austen.)
Of my pitch - After his wife Jane commits an unthinkable murder, her grieving husband struggles to fin…

Got 60 seconds? That's the amount of time it would take to read the daily installments of CORPORELLA: An Office Space meets Cinderella tale set in the tough-as-(manicured)-nails Texas cosmetics industry.
This is one of many of my screenplays and I though I would serialize it on my blog throughout the month of June.
It's not Tolstoy, but if you've ever worked in a cubicle, this story has something for you.

I just returned from a road trip from Texas to Illinois, crossing through Oklahoma and Missouri on the way. Much of this trip took us along Route 66. As any seasoned road-tripper knows, one passes ancient gas stations and Greyhounds. (We called them Road Dawgs when I worked there.) Truckers and trains. Red barns in various stages of beautiful decay. Yawning green pastures dotted with all forms of newly born animals. Fruit stands selling local plums and peaches. Waterways with names like Honey Cr…

I frequently get asked what prompted me to write a story about a mother who kills. It's a fair question. If you told me five years ago that I'd be writing about this subject, I might have looked at you like you had banana peel shoes. (And if you do own a pair of banana peel shoes, I mean no disrespect, but I hope you have good insurance.)
Ultimately, I did write about the subject of maternal filicide, but not without a good bit of trepidation. Though JANEOLOGY is set in motion by this troubling…

Janeology just received a 5 Bolt review from the
New Mystery Reader. Woo!
To celebrate the event, I have a couple first edition, signed, hardback copies of Janeology to give away to my most creative friends.
All you have to do to prove your creativity is write a ten word story about a dysfunctional family. (See, Jane’s family is pretty dysfunctional so, well, you get the idea.) It can’t be under ten words. It…

Step one: Make sacrifices to get the book written
Charles Bock, author of Beautiful Children, has said,
"Truth is I worked on this novel for 10 years. Not ten years of watching Seinfeld at 11 PM. Ten years of a high priority in my life. When I was dating the woman who is now my wife, I would only go out with her two nights a week because I couldn't give more time to that.

Swing by
www.authorlink.com to hear the April BookBites Audio feature, including an interview with me, which is good - and an interview with my publisher, Derek Armstrong of Kunati Books, which is VERY good. In the interview, Armstrong talks about the publishing industry today, what skills are necessary and why he published JANEOLOGY - the thriller Booklist calls "Fascinating...as much a character study as a legal thriller."

Twas the night before publication, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, except my computer mouse.
A few author copies were stacked on the table with care,
In hopes that St. Oprah, would one day be there.
My children were nestled and snug in their beds,
While visions of royalty checks danced in their heads.
And hubby by the TV, and I by my dog,
I’d just settled down to write a new blog.
When out on the porch there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my computer to…

Listen up American Idol wannabes: It’s not Simon Cowell’s fault. It’s in your genes.
Genetic researchers in the U.S. recently suggested that one gene may hold the key to one’s ability to have perfect pitch – a trait found in only 1 in 10,000 people.
A study including 2,200 participants done at the University of California, San Francisco, found that people with perfect pitch can instantly pick out the pure tones with ease.(Nature) And those with the ability most often had musical training befor…

As I inch closer to my publication date (20 days and counting) I've been thinking about the idea of pen names. I wonder how many of my writer friends had already chosen a pen name before they finished their novels. I know I dreamt about this for years. I was the book nerd version of the girl who, instead of scribbling her imaginary married name on her Charlies' Angels pocket folder, wrote various versions of a nom de plume. We won't go into the various combinations I wrote down. Suffice it to sa…

Even God took a day of rest from His work, so in this writer's life today, I tried to stay away from the computer. I bought Easter dresses for my girls, helped them practice their ballet steps and read a good bit of Horton Hears a Whoo.
While out shopping, some marketing wizards stacked at least 100 stuffed Hortons right, smack in the front of the store, in front of my 3 and 4 year olds. So now, Horton, is a part of our family, already showing his preference for fine literature (and shameless p…
