This year's trek from Philadelphia down to the
2009 West Virginia Book Festival in Charleston was the last of three book fairs that my family and I have attended over the past three weeks. The indoor event held at the Charleston Civic Center was a welcome change from having to deal with the temper tantrums that Mother Nature threw during the fairs in Maryland and New Jersey. During the two day event I had the pleasure of meeting many fans of sci fi and fellow authors. Sales of my 2012 scie…

I've returned from Day One of the
Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. I am representing an Hawaiian publisher of SAT Preparation books at this year's show. I'm sharing space in Booth 143, the Book Publicists of Southern California booth. It was an interesting first day. Here are some of my observations.
First, the Day One crowd in 2009 appears to be at least as big as the 2008 crowd. That's remarkable considering people's perception of the economy. It really shouldn't surprise me, howev…

The Book ‘Em Foundation was formed to fight illiteracy and keep kids from committing crimes. Their slogan is “Buy a book, stop a crook.” There are several Book ‘Em events now and many authors attend and donate proceeds of their books to the cause.
This year’s Book ‘Em in Waynesboro, VA, was another incredible experience. In addition to the main even Saturday, many of the authors visit the surrounding schools. I visited five classrooms, teaching the kids how to create a believable character. Oth…

Don't know how many you are aware of the Book 'Em Foundation, but their Waynesboro, VA festival is this weekend. There's sixty authors in attendance, including one from Scotland! (And Dirk is a really cool guy - I could listen to him speak for hours!)
Check out the Book 'Em website for a festival near you or to see who is appearing at this weekend's event - there's a full list of talks & discussions, too.

No National holidays this month but April is not without its rewards. The Boys of Summer open the month with a new baseball season. Then not to give the only headlines to baseball, the thoroughbred horse world is working its way through the final prep races and pointing their best three year olds toward the first Saturday in May and the Kentucky Derby.
In late April Southern California will again be treated to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books held on the UCLA Campus on the weekend of the…
