Over the years I've met many people who offer products and services that can help authors and publishers sell more books. During the past two months, after attending several conferences where I renewed many friendships, I realized that I should introduce these people to readers of my newsletter and customers of Open Horizons.
So I'm hosting a weekly teleseminar where I will interview someone I think you should know - 1. Because you will learn some useful tips from them and 2. because they offer… Continue

Book trailers or videos only work if they go viral. Well-made book videos aren't worth a dime unless they are seen. Why pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to create a video that no one sees.
In Lesson 4 of the Ten Million Eyeballs seminar, I teach you how to create viral videos -- videos that are seen by hundreds of thousands or millions of people. Not 45, not 120, not 346 people, but millions.
Check out the Ten Million Eyeballs program at… Continue

Question: I am a newbie at this to say the least. I got a lucky, fast break into publishing. I want more but can you tell me the advanced method of using your site to promote? How much time do i spend, who do i befriend, who is the most influential member that can get you to retail?
John's Answer: You don't use this site to promote to people. You use it to create relationships with other authors and publishers -- and then use those relationships to create relationships with media,… Continue

With all the recent media attention on the pending Healthcare Bill and whether our elected representatives are actually "reading the bill" before signing it into law, I thought I'd take a moment to emphasize the importance of reading (and understanding) all the paperwork we as authors must contend with in our daily lives.
As you know, earning a living in today's publishing arena is vastly different and greatly more complicated than the world our predecessors faced just 20 short years ago. Today… Continue

Luck Be Our Lady!
How much does luck contribute to an author's success?
When I think about luck and writing, one of the first word sets that comes to mind is Harry Potter. That is far more than a story of success for a down-and-out writer who was on social services sitting in a coffee shop every day with her infant at her feet writing her book. An ex-school teacher who was writing for no one but herself. That is truly a story of phenomenal luck with a capital "L."
As I've heard the story, J.K.… Continue

Join expert writing coach N. Kali Mincy and international best-selling author William R. Patterson as they share their success secrets and answer questions on writing, publishing and book marketing. (PRE-RECORDED SEMINAR)
This will be brief, as I've written about this topic before. I just want you to understand very clearly that if you are spending time, effort, and money on traditional book promotion (i.e., signings, mailers, print ads, brochures and fliers), you may well be tossing your hard-earned cash out the window.
The explosion and fragmentation of mainstream media outlets have made it extremely difficult to capture the reader’s attention. Just like an arms race, the arsenal of traditional book promotiona… Continue

Question from a Book Marketing Network member -- Is trademark and copyright the same thing? I have a unique idea for an inspirational series. Do I just copyright it or does it need a trademark as well?
John's Answer -- Trademark and copyright are not the same thing.
For a book series, you might want to trademark the series if you have a unique and brandable title for the series. E.g. Chicken Soup for the Soul, for Dummies series, etc.
Trademarks protect the brand.
Copyright protects the writ… Continue

Here is my answer to a personal message I received on this network. The author asked how you interact with the readers of your previous book if your latest book is on a completely different topic. Again, here is my answer:
====
As for your question, you would be surprise on varied people's interests are. And if you have an audience for one book, at least 20 to 40% of that audience will probably be interested in your next book, no matter what the topic. (If the new book is on the same topic, of… Continue
Here are two more reasons why you should be on Twitter:
1. My http://www.bookmarket.com website's Alexa rank has gone from 169,000 to 134,500 in five weeks. The only change in my online marketing strategy and activities during that time was a renewed participation and active posting in Twitter.com.
2. Yesterday, I connected with an editor at the New York Times. I'm scheduled to do an interview with one of his reporters in the next couple of weeks.
3. See below, from a post I did here l… Continue
