- About Me and My Book:
- Hidden Passages: Tales to Honor the Crones is a collection of eight uplifting stories about girls and women who, when faced with life’s challenges, turn to their cultural grandmothers for comfort and advice. Though the stories are set in different eras and cover different kinds of issues, each one reflects a reverence for the divine in every woman.
Forest Song: Finding Home is the story of Judy Baumann’s struggle to escape to her true home in the woods and to grow into her power there. A cast of magical characters, including a wise woman and the woman’s consort, help the girl in this enterprise. The story, situated between Germany and Poland, begins in 1929 and ends in 1933 when Judy becomes a woman.
Forest Song: Little Mother is the second of the Forest Song series and continues Judy Baumann’s story. In this episode, Judy reluctantly moves from her teacher’s house into a home of her own. From there she helps the forest denizens hide Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany and in the process discovers sexual love. In the end she becomes a mother in an unconventional way. A beautiful story of struggle and healing as a young woman comes of age.

The subtitle of this book, "Tales to Honor the Crones", gave me a false impression. A collection of stories about crones should be about the end of life, but these stories are full of life. They are vivid, arresting, and entertaining.

I was excited to begin this book after reading Ms. SpiderHawk’s book Hidden Passages: Tales of to Honor the Crones. I was definitely not disappointed. The story begins with a young girl, Judy, living with her family in Germany. Her family builds a wrought iron fence to attempt to contain her. Judy hears the song of the forest and constantly tries to break through and run for the woods.
