I leraned this evening that CULLOTTA reached #1 on the Amazon bestsellers list earlier today in the True Crime category.
The list is updated hourly, and the book was at #13 when I checked it around 10 p.m.
At any rate, it was kind of a thrill being on top, even for a short time.

People often ask what it was like writing a book with a former mobster. Following is an excerpt from my newsletter describing the experience from my perspective.

Like you I retired, but still do part-time consulting personally and for the US. Small Business Administration's SCORE (consultants to small business). I decided to write a novel encompassing real life experiences mixed in with fiction. I've financed publishers during my venture capital career, so I know something about the market place, publishing industry and promotion. I did a 3/6 months due diligence and tried and tested the vanities, pods, agents, etc. I knew I would have to self-publish, since no one knew me and they are really as you know looking for the John Grishams, etc.. However, my daughter-in-law published two books with Iuniverse in 2000 and 2001. At that time the cost was negligible and she self-promoted. Since then they have merged with Authorhouse...which shows some astuteness on Authorhouse's part. Consequently, I went with them and I've picked and choosed what part of the menu I want. My grassroots marketing I can take care of myself. However, I don't want boxes of books in my garage...since they are a POD and will drop ship on my behalf. If you'd like to see what I've done: Goggle: Ralph L. McNeal, Sr - Sleeper Cell.
Consider me a friend.

Scribblers’ Retreat is a non-profit organization established with the goal of reaching writers of all ages; to inspire and promote their hidden gifts and talents.
By involving the local community, authors, publishers, editors, journalists and all forms of the literary world, we are opening their minds and bringing hope where there was doubt.
Scribblers’ Retreat is not the typical classroom setting. It was designed to bring world-class authors, literature professors, editors, journalists, illustrators, photo journalists, proofreaders, publishers, publicists, screenplay writers, and website/graphic designers, etc. one-on-one with young and old alike. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for someone who has had a manuscript in a desk drawer for 40 years or who has an outstanding poem that simply must be read.

I met a retired NYC detective in Magdalena, NM while doing some research. His name is Armand Romano. I'm sure he could write a book or two about his career.
My own book is set in 1883 and is built around a shooting in northcentral Texas where a young man would kill a man in self-defense but would be charged with first degree murder. I've spent a lot of time learning about law enforcement and the legal system from that time period. A lot has changed for sure!
Good luck with your book(s)!
