Something About Me and My Book:
The Age of Enlightenment changed the way mankind thought about life, culture and human relationships. In her evocative new book, The Power of Acknowledgment, Judith W. Umlas unleashes the concept of an Age of Acknowledgment we can all help bring about.

In a time of celebrity worship and self-absorption, Judith’s well-reasoned and heart-felt appeal is so counterculture as to be revolutionary. Imagine, as does the author, people acknowledging each other’s humanity, accomplishments, talents and wisdom on a continuous basis, it might just catch on. And wouldn’t that be something!

Judy Umlas is the publisher of IIL Publishing, New York and is the Sr. Vice President of Learning Innovations at International Institute for Learning, Inc. (IIL), and Director/Secretary of Small Companies United for Global Disaster Relief, Inc., a not-for-profit organization. She is also the publisher of a global Web portal (www.allPM.com) for over 40,000 project managers, in 90 countries. She has worked in television production, marketing and corporate business development for 30 years, at CBS, PBS cable television and IIL. Her writing credits include articles published in Working Woman magazine, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and many other newspapers and magazines.

Hi all,
As it would appear that most of you are US based, thank you for making me feel so at home, your friendship and words of encouragement have been overwhelming. My background has always been in Entertainment. For 10 years I was a professional actor after graduating from the London College of Drama then, after realising that the 'out of work actor' was not just the butt of many jokes, but was actually a fact of life,
I joined RCA Records and ended up as Head of A&R. I was with RCA for over 14 years and, whilst there, I handled the
UK & European marketing and promotion for Elvis Presley. In 1977 I was awarded what is generally considered to be the last 'Gold Disc' connected to anybody associated with Elvis prior to his death in that same year.
For a number of years now, I have been running my own Entertainment Agency and Management Company.
My book 'Waiting in the wings' is aimed at the legions of budding Agents, Managers or Impresarios who are out there and, to the best of my knowledge, is the only book that details, fromA to Z, what you need to know and do to set yourself up in this business. My book cobvers every aspect, from How to set up, How to find acts, How to find Clients,Current legislation, Case Histories,Contracts and everything else that one would need to know.
I am thinking of embarking on a tour of speaking engagements, and would like to know if any of my colleagues on this forum have done this. I would be looking at 'wet testing' this in the UK first, and then doing a run of US venues as well. I would need a good Agency or Company to handle everything, as there is no way that I would undertake to book venues and publicise events in an untested and potentially huge market like the US. So, if any of you have worked with a company who can offer the level of expertise in this type of promotion, please let me know.
Lovely to have so many authors from different backgrounds and disciplines. It is all about learning from each other, and what better place to do it!
Take care all....Speak soon.

Hi all,
What a fab site, with so many authors of different backgrounds and disciplines all in one place. Most of you seem to be from the US but, as I am UK based contributor, thank you all for making me feel quite at home and not at all out of place.
Clearly, this site is all about knowledge sharing and one author talking to another, in the cold light of day, away from all of the hype and, yes, why we all want to enter such a precarious occupation in the first place!
My background is in Entertainment. I was a professional actor for over 10 years, before becoming Head of A&R for RCA Records & Pye Records and, latterly, for the past 14 years
I have been an Agent and Manager. (Although based in the UK, I handled the British & European Promotion & Marketing for Elvis Presley whilst at RCA and, in 1977, was awarded what is generally considered to be the last 'Gold Record' presented to anybody prior to Elvis' death in that same year).

Thanks for your comments and support. I have gotten feedback from every person who has read the book that it changed them instantly -- it's just so easy, cheap, no software to install, etc. I found out that National Braille Press is making the book available free of charge to any or all 12,000 of its subscribers who purchase something from their catalogue. They feel that the message is extremely important to the blind community. Isn't that fascinating? We just don't know where our journey will take us, do we?

I hope your power of acknowledgment does catch on. You're so right about the need to relate to each person's humanity, talents and wisdom. Thanks for making me your friend. Margaret Guthrie
