- I am a poet/musician who has for now put aside 25 years of clinical social work (child welfare, adolescent therapy, juvenile justice) to allow others to "solve their own g.d. problems, for a change!" while I figure out how best to solve my own, addressing other problems on a grander (?) scale--or at least differently--in my writing and performance art, exercizing my genetic disposition toward social justice and political activism.
In other words, I still care about people, and believe in them! I feel the world is ever more rapidly and ineluctably changing into one where it is imperative that we increasingly listen to and respect each other, especially anyone or everyone we regard as The Other.
I am a linguist of sorts (French, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic) who's traveled quite a bit the world over, and has spent the past dozen years frequently visiting (and once living) in Egypt, where I've been tracking the digital revolution. Last year I partnered in opening a small internet cafe in Giza, a stone's throw from the pyramids. It's a thrill to me to see little kids in the community navigate the globe checking out far-flung places they (unfortunately) are unlikely to ever see in person, but still curious about, on Google Earth.
I've been a student of metaphysics all my life. The past four years or so, I've been developing my ideas of how poetry relates to music, and produced an anthology CD, "Beauty Keeps Laying Its Sharp Knife Against Me" (Logochrysalis 2008; logochrysalis.com; cdbaby.com/brantlyon), inspired by the 14th century mystic poet, Hafiz. I composed and performed the music on it for poets I've worked with over the past three or so years, in my 'jazzoetry' reading series, "Hydrogen Jukebox" in NYC--poets whose work I think is exceptionally lyrical, suited to an inimate marriage with music.
As a composer/keyboardist my musical styles are all over the lot: R&B/funk, world beat, classical, jazz/ragtime, you name it.
As a poet and a writer my sensibilites incline, most definitely, toward the narrative--who doesn't like a good story? But my subject areas are very broad. I also enjoy writing essays and reviews.
About a year ago, a handful of my literary colleagues and I founded Uphook, a small press, and released our first book of poetry, "A Cautionary Tale: Peer into the Lives of Seven New York Performing Poets" (2008), an anthology. I've a chapbook, "Your Infidel Eyes", published by Poets Wear Prada Press (2006). And pubs in various anthologies and journals, online and in print, over the years. A few of my poems translated into Nepali will appear this fall in the journal, "Pratik", out of Dehli, India. I'm currently finishing a novel, "Oasis & Mirage", a bi-cultural exploration of psycho-spiritual/geo-political values involving an American living in a small oasis town in upper Egypt.
My ideals are always spiritual, my deepest thoughts about "the real" shared with a few who truly understand the hidden side of life, but my love spread to all, freely.

It is the opportunity of a lifetime for someone who has had a manuscript in a desk drawer for 40 years or who has an outstanding poem that simply must be read.
