Profile Information

Hometown:
Berkeley, California
About Me and My Book:
Anastasia M. Ashman is an award-winning writer and producer of intellectually-stimulating multimedia entertainment projects that further the worldwide cultural conversation.

A literary impresario and cultural feminist personality, she capitalizes on 10-years of expatriatism and a decade of work in American media and entertainment to conceive, write, edit, produce and market entertainment and educational projects [like books, films, tours, speaking events, radio and tv shows, intellectual salons and exhibits] that attract a unique global community, further the worldwide cultural conversation and raise the feminine voice. She’s drawn to the nexus of women, culture, travel -- and history, which her archaeology degree informs -- and the topic of personal dynamics in societies small and large, from one family to entire hemispheres.

She's the coeditor of the internationally bestselling expatriate literature collection Tales from the Expat Harem: Foreign Women in Modern Turkey, which is recommended by Lonely Planet and NBC's Today Show as well as studied in seven North American universities, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Anastasia coproduced Istanbul's first Global Nomad Salon in association with Janera.com, part of a worldwide series of intellectual dinner parties that the Economist magazine calls “jetsetters with a conscience.” With women’s health specialist and author Dr. Nassim Assefi she is developing an annual gathering of globally mobile progressives. In 2009 she became a founding member of TED Global, the international ideas conference in Oxford, England.

Her writing on women, culture and travel has appeared in Asian Wall Street Journal, Village Voice and National Geographic Traveler among others. She is currently at work on a forensic memoir of friendship.

The native of Berkeley, California holds a degree in Classical Greek, Roman and Near Eastern Archaeology and has been an expatriate in Rome, Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul, where she lives with her Turkish husband.

Winged etiquette

“Manners are your passport to the world,” the Gilded Age writer of American etiquette Emily Post once opined. The mid-century sage also said etiquette isn’t a strict code of socially correct behavior we need to memorize -- it’s simply how our lives touch other people. Respect.

Although more a proponent of… Continue

The expat divide

Expatriatism is often a life apart. So how does a writer abroad get up to speed and compete in her home market?

Here’s my answer in a guest post — about the fortuitous intersection of expatriatism, epublishing and digital citizenship — at former Writers Digest editor Maria Schneider’s Editor Unleashed blog.

Are you culturally or geographically challenged? How do you leContinue

Defining Expat Lit -- live on Twitter May 29

Expatriate literature may be stocked in the travel section, but does it deserve a shelf of its own?

Living for extended periods in foreign locales, expatriates struggle to reestablish themselves and find meaningful access to their new home. Travelers passing through often have the luxury to avoid the very issues of assimilation and identity that dominate the expat psyche. On Twitter's #LitChat May 25-29 we'll talk about the unique depths this can b… Continue

HOW ONE AUTHOR USES TWITTER

As the coeditor of an anthology by foreign women in modern Turkey, and an American living abroad in Istanbul, Twitter has been an invaluable tool to bring me closer to the world I work in, and up to speed on my industry.

I meet my readers (fellow expats, travelers, writers, and culturati among them) and my publishing world colleagues (agents, authors, editors, publishers) to discuss not only issues relevant to my first book, but also to the memoir I am currently writing, and the rapidly changin… Continue

Traditional Publishing Now Powerless?

Here in Istanbul I can feel the tremors coming out of Austin this week after the explosive South by Southwest panel "New Think for Old Publishers."

I'm completing a new book and watching the industry combust. This week's events have helped clarify my options.

Take a look at the following blog reports to see why an industry inside… Continue

Hi Anastasia, Thanks for the comment. I like Twitter very much, but just don't get a chance to post often. I read your article, and enjoyed it. I hope someday that I can use Twitter in as many ways as you.
