BEING YOUR OWN PUBLISHER

Yeah, yeah, there's new tech parameters and a paradigm shift and all that.

But the important thing is that there are (and always have been) alternatives to writing something then trying to sell the rights to a publishing company. This group is to explore these areas of self-owned publishing biz.

Some writers have niche books, some have special needs (like texts for their seminars), some are just too entrepreneurial to sell of their own inspirations. And some just want to see something in print.

There is a spectrum these days, from big publishers through the new, small POD publishers, to using publishing services like lulu.com or iuniverse, to printing yourself and selling online, to release of downloadable mp3 "podcasts" or pdf manuals.

If you have expertise, experience, or questions in this area, don't be shy about posting them here. It's a rapidly expanding field and nobody knows everything about it, but lots of us are learning enough to do what we want to do and successfully get it across the counter.

I'd like to know anyone's experience if any with distribution of a POD book via classic distributor channels. Especially children's books.

I just heard something about board books three days ago in one of my Yahoo Groups. Let me see if I can track that down.

I am a new author with very little experience. Since it is so hard to get noticed in the publishing world, I am publishing my own book(DESIGN REVOLUTIONS MEDIA, LLC). I have contacts in China as well as in the states for printing. My book is very labor intensive due the the many elements in the book. It is a picture, board book that has lift the flaps, look and find, ABC page, and a magnetic puzzle in the back. The book is about construction equipment and based off my son. I don't think anyone manufacturers these kind of books in the states anymore, especially for self-publishers. Has anyone tried self-publishing a picture, board book? Thank you for all the good input.

I suggest going online and looking up Preditors and Editors. They have a list of publishers, agents, lawyers etc. and a little bit of background information.

hi, I have just found out from apple that authors can make their book available to the public for downloade on apple itunes.I register and it's gonna take a few weeks, but even if your book sale is 3 per downlaode that is still a great profit, I have an iphone and it is cool. if anyone needs help filling out the form let me know, it'skinda confusing, but I finally got it

Hello,
My book, Something Desirable, was published in May. I've started writing my second novel, but I'm still learning how to market and seeking reviews. I have learned it's very important to market at least four to six months before publication, I didn't do enough although I tried word of mouth in the beginning. My advice to anyone who is about to have their book published is focus on serious marketing and getting the reviews before your book comes out.
