Please help me with your votes. My book Insufficient Mating Material is in a social networking contest (which means that authors are required to ask for votes, but only for the cover art, title, and blurb, which are all on the contest page)

If that link breaks

Does anyone here know of a site similar to Firstwriter.com where a publisher can be listed as we are currently seeking new authors.

I keep copies of the raw files on disc. If anyone challenges my copyrights I just dangle the disc and say, "have you got this?"

I have had two copyright infringement suits. Both were settled in my favor.

Ms. Vickery's comment about copyright protection is dead wrong/ In order to sue for infringement you must have a registration with the U.S. Copyright Office. Without this you have no standing and cannot sue and you cannot sue on these issues in any other court. If you cannot sue, what protection do you have? None.

Hi All,

My attorney, my previous agent, and my current publisher all insist that in lieu of an official copyright, I make a hard copy or disk copy of my original manuscript (before edits or revisions) and mail it to myself from the nearest post office. Once it arrives it is to be stored unopened. This is my copyright and will stand up in a court of law within the USA. Have no idea about other countries. Hope this helps answer the questions.

Tamara — Franny appears to be self-publishing, To get in with esteemed publishing houses an agent is essential as they will not deal directly with authors (a few exceptions), But getting a reputable agent is incredibly difficult. Some independent publishing houses will accept submissions. Some offer services and require payment. Few will accept Ms unless they have been well edited. Which is just as well, as some publishers will publish about anything. If you are seeking a publisher to take over your books, promote and market them, unless it is one of the reputable houses, you will still have to do the whole lot yourself or pay. Simply having your book on Amazon etc will not necessarily sell many (or any) copies. I would advise Franny to keep clear of those who publish for free (or even make a token advance) but pay miserable royalties and have punishing clauses in their contracts. AND you still have to do your own promotion and selling.

Franny,
How are you publishing your books? If you already have contracts signed with a publishing house, I'm not sure what a benefit would be to have an agent. To me an agent is valuable for industry contacts, reviewing contracts, and possibly helping with editing. If you've already have all that covered, I don't know that I'd bother.
