Book Marketing Network

The network for book authors and publishers

I was surprised when a local television station recently invited me to appear on a "Community Events" program to promote my book signing event at the local public library. Two years ago, I appeared on this same program to promote my first novel about colonial Boston in 1766. I arrived in the period attire of John Hancock, giving the interview in character.
I was invited for a return visit to publicize a book signing for the sequel, with the requirement that "John Hancock" appear again.
The message is clear for authors of historical fiction; a period costume sells your idea, your vision, and your books.
These days I appear as Hancock when I give seminars or at book signings; I encourage you to do the same, whoever your character may be. As the host of the TV program said, "Who doesn't want to hear from John Hancock?"

Now that's multimedia! Can you forge the signature, too? Best wishes to you.

Surprisingly, that has been requested as part of the authograph. I've practiced and its pretty good, if I do say so myself.

That is a pretty novel (sic) way to promote the book. But my historical fiction would take more than one costume, and I am tested to figure out which one to use. I have a victorian adventure The Queen's Marksman and a pirate adventure The Black Witch, and an upcoming French Revolution adventure Written In BLOOD. If I promote all of them at one time I may be forced to wear street clothes anyway. *Shrug*. :)

I just had another book signing at a Public Library, again as Hancock, and I'm convinced it is the way to go. I suggest you assume the character of a tavern strumpet which would possibly be consistent with your time frame. That way you can say that you knew a marksman, a pirate and a French marquis, as you sign your books "for the author". I guarantee they will ask you to pose for pictures also. Appearing is street clothes is functional but it doesn't arouse curiosity.

I honestly must admit, 'What a Unique Marquis!' And if you were invited back, you must be a great actor too.
