HOW VALUABLE ARE BOOK SIGNINGS TO SALES?

I have heard some discussion of this from both sides - what is the collective wisdom on BMN? Any hints and tips? Things to avoid?

I had my first booksigning, and I had a story in the local paper of a small town. Guess what I only sold 4 books, but I talked to a lot of people. I had a yellow legal pad that people signed to get updated information. I sent each person who purchased a book a thank you note, including the bookstore that hosted the booksigning. I felt discouraged but I read online someplace that a successful booksiginig is sellling between 4-7 books. My husband keeps reminding me that I'm building a fan base, making friends, and I like talking with people. I'm still out their promoting. I have more booksignings lined up. Plus I'm having fun.
