Event Description

It’s a small world after all.

Have you heard of the Six degrees of Separation (also referred to as the "Human Web")? The human web refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most...six steps away from any other person on Earth. Melinda Winner, 23+ year arthritis sufferer and author of A Complete Illustrated Guide to Cooking with Arthritis wanted to test this theory while embarking on a mission across the USA educating Americans on the severity of arthritis which is crippling over 48 million men, women and children.

Melinda will begin her journey in Zepherhills, FL on August 10, 2009. She will be referred to her next host by the host family she is staying with there, and so on. Follow her at www.cookingwitharthritis.com as she travels the country demonstrating cooking techniques and tips for tackling everyday tasks in the kitchen. She will share her story & advice for living with arthritis. She hopes to assist the physically challenged in regaining their independence in the kitchen, as she has, but more importantly, listen to others stories and offer hope!

Melinda suffers from five forms of arthritis and a birth injury. She has worked very hard to not allow it to stop her from pursuing her dreams despite her extreme pain, bouts with depression and battle against the 100 pounds she gained & lost. Melinda has followed her dreams all the way to the Food network. She competed on the Ultimate Recipe Showdown in 2008. Melinda has three wonderful children and three grandchildren, whom she adores. She has also authored two books: The first, Yankee cooking with Southern Charm was released in 2008. The second, A complete Illustrated Guide to Cooking with Arthritis was released this July. The second book is the first of its kind. This book was designed to help the physically challenged regain their independence in the kitchen. A Complete Illustrated Guide to Cooking with Arthritis shows ways to prepare foods using items around the house. The color step by step photos and delectable recipes take the reader on a culinary journey around the world pain free and fearless. The target market for her latest release is sufferers of chronic pain, arthritis (all 100+ forms), people with injuries (may it be temporary or permanent), disabled and those who simply enjoy food and cooking. “I found cooking to be almost impossible on bad days. However, when you have a family, not feeding them is not an option. So I started using things around my house to complete each kitchen task. For example, plant stands with wheels became one of my most useful tools for transporting everything from babies to water. The weight of my body was my most powerful weapon. I used it to cut vegetables and open doors.”,says Melinda. Melinda continues her life’s mission to help others not only survive this disease but live a productive life filled with hope, happiness, joy…and good food!
